Meevaa Foods, the frozen and ready-to-eat arm of meat-delivery platform Zappfresh, has appointed consumer industry veteran Rajneesh Bhasin as an Independent Director. The move marks a transition for the export-grade frozen food platform from a founder-led startup toward a more institutionalized corporate structure.
The appointment comes as Meevaa Foods—operating under Avyom Foodtech Pvt. Ltd.—attempts to scale its vegetarian-focused portfolio across fresh and value-added categories. By bringing in external oversight, the company is looking to move beyond the typical "growth at all costs" mindset, opting instead for a path rooted in strategic discipline and process-driven expansion.
Strengthening Board
The Indian frozen food market is currently witnessing a steep climb in demand as urban consumption patterns shift toward convenience-led formats. However, for a brand like Meevaa, the challenge lies in managing a complex supply chain while maintaining export-grade quality. The induction of Bhasin is intended to address this "operational mettle," bringing in expertise from his years in the FMCG and consumer business sectors to refine board-level decision-making.
Earlier this year, Zappfresh strengthened its play in the ready-to-cook segment by acquiring a majority stake in Avyom Foodtech. This acquisition provided the brand with export-certified facilities and deeper processing capabilities. With the physical infrastructure now in place, the company is focusing on the "soft" infrastructure of governance to ensure that its skyrocketing growth does not lead to a cash leak or quality dilution.
As we enter the next phase of our journey, strengthening governance and bringing in experienced perspectives at the board level becomes increasingly important— Deepanshu Manchanda, MD, Zappfresh
“Rajneesh brings a deep understanding of consumer businesses and category building. His guidance will help us build a more structured organisation while staying focused on quality, consistency, and long-term value creation”, he added.
Growth Pathways
Bhasin’s role will be centered on building long-term institutional capabilities—a move that is often the difference between a fleeting startup and a lasting brand. As the company expands into more diverse food categories, it faces a cluttered market where consistency is the primary currency. The company’s strategy involves leveraging Bhasin’s background in supply chain management to build a more resilient organization that can handle the volatility of the food tech sector.
Commenting on his new role, Rajneesh Bhasin stated, “Meevaa Foods has built a credible position in the fresh and frozen food space, supported by its supply chain capabilities and focus on quality. Having spent several years building and scaling consumer businesses, I see strong potential in their operating model.”
He further emphasized the necessity of a disciplined approach: “As an Independent Director, my focus will be on strengthening governance frameworks and helping build institutional capabilities. As the company expands across categories and markets, it becomes important to ensure that growth is consistent, disciplined, and backed by strong processes.”
Future Ready Platforms
The broader vision for Meevaa Foods involves becoming a future-ready food platform that spans both fresh and value-added products. By utilizing export-grade facilities, the brand is targeting the premium end of the Indian kitchen, where quality assurance is a non-negotiable factor for the modern consumer.
The entry into the ready-to-eat space via Avyom signifies that Zappfresh is no longer just a raw meat supplier but a diversified food-tech player. As the competition heats up in the organized food brand space, the focus on "governance depth" may serve as the company's defensive moat.
By prioritizing board-level oversight early in its scaling journey, Meevaa Foods is signaling to investors and the market that it is ready for the rigors of a more mature business environment. The next few quarters will likely determine how well these new governance structures translate into on-ground execution and supply chain efficiency.
